about

“This performance of 24 to 24 Music is Arthur Russell’s first public performance of his music in almost two years. Russell came to New York in 1973, after studying extensively on the West Coast (‘cello with Andor Toth Jr., Stephanie Beal, Margaret Rowell and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music; world music with Ali Akbar Khan and G.S. Sachdev; composition with William Mathieu). In New York, he studied composition with Charles Wuorinen and Bulent Arel and directed the music program at The Kitchen (1974-75). He has also performed with Laurie Anderson, John Cage, Alice Coltrane, Jon Gibson, Peter Gordon, Garrett List, Jackson MacLow and Christian Wolff. Performances of Russell’s own music have taken place at Berkeley’s 1750 Arch Street, The Kitchen, Sobossek’s NYC and the Experimental Intermedia Foundation. He is best-known for his composition “Instrumentals” (1975), written to accompany the viewing of slides by Yuko Nonomura.” from The Kitchen Center for Video and Music press release 1979
